About the speaker
Zhan Bohui, born in Raoping County, Guangdong, studied under renowned linguists and dialectologists Professor Wang Li and Professor Yuan Jiahua in his early years. After graduating from the Department of Linguistics, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, he went on to teach at Wuhan University for three decades before being reassigned to Jinan University, Guangzhou as Full Professor. He previously served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Director of the Chinese Dialects Research Centre of the Jinan University. He is now Professor of the Department of Chinese, Jinan University, Honorary Director of the Chinese Dialects Research Centre, and Honorary Professor of the School of Chinese, University of Hong Kong.

During his 65 years of illustrious career as an academic, Professor Zhan has contributed tremendously in both research and teaching of Chinese dialectology, lexicography, applied linguistics, and language standardization. He is the author of more than 400 papers and over 40 publications, including the acclaimed Collected Essays of Chinese Dialectology (Tokyo: Ryūkei shosha, 1982). In 2013, he was appointed as Chief Expert and Editor-in-Chief of the voluminous Dictionary of Chinese Dialectology, which has earned critical acclaim since its release in 2017.
