Organization

Established in January 2012, The Jao Studies Foundation is a registered charitable organisation of the HKSAR.

Mission

The Jao Studies Foundation aims to promote and develop education in traditional Chinese culture and enhance cultural exchange between east and west. It is hoped that through the study of Professor Jao’s scholarship, writings, calligraphy, painting, and thought, the full breadth of Chinese traditional culture can be effectively promoted to a wide audience.

Professor Jao Tsung-i is an iconic figure in the fields of contemporary academic research and artistic creation. Professor Jao has made groundbreaking contributions to many academic disciplines, including the study of inscriptions on oracle bones, bamboo strips, and silk manuscripts, interpretation of Confucian classics, paleography, the study of ancient history, the history of China’s intercultural contacts, religious studies, Dunhuang studies, literature and literary criticism, bibliography, and Chaozhou studies. Professor Jao is known in literary circles for his remarkable attainment in his writing in all the major genres of classical Chinese poetry. His research has also covered epigraphy, music, and the history of painting and calligraphy. He is also a versatile artist who has created his own styles of both painting and calligraphy. Therefore, the scope of Jao Studies must cover the entire history of Chinese culture, and explore the interaction of academic research and artistic creation. In this connection, Jao Studies has generally summed up the study of Professor Jao, his scholarship and his research methods, as well as the study of traditional Chinese culture. It has also set a clear direction for studying the traditional Chinese culture.

The Jao Studies Foundation integrates resources from different platforms for studying, promoting and developing Jao Studies. It will spur on the future development of traditional Chinese culture. It is hoped that by studying, promoting, subsidising and co-operating with others in the study of the Jao Studies, it can act as an effective catalyst for studying and promoting Chinese academic and artistic achievements.
